“The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:”
A footnote in the LDS Bible says of horseleach: “a blood sucking parasite which is seemingly never satiated.”
A footnote in the Geneva Study Bible says:
“The leach has two forks in her tongue, which here he calls her two daughters, by which she sucks the blood, and is never satisfied: even so, the covetous extortioners are insatiable.”
Some people try to identify what is represented by the words, such as horseleach is Covetousness, and her two daughters are Avarice and Ambition.
Horseleach is a term worth reviving. I can think of many applications, such as gambling is a horseleach on society. Instead of gambling, substitute the word (or person?) of your choice.
